Honestly, I'm not sure if this is a pattern or just a coincidence Given that BW and XY also seem to be OS and AG 2.0, respectively, I feel like these are more than just coincidences. SM was definitely not DP 2.0 though, and XY wasn't terribly close to AG except for having a younger fourth member of the group. In most other ways, it was closer to DP or stood on its own. |

So, there’s a pretty good theory going around that the starters are themed around entertainment. Grookey is based around music, Scorbunny is based around sports, and Sobble is based around drama. The last one actually makes a lot of sense considering its fin looks like a feathered quill.

AG and XY also both had: 1) Two of the traveling companions that are siblings 2) Said sets of siblings that are related to the fifth Gym Leader of their respective regions, which they tried to hide at first 3) Ash trying to challenge the aforementioned fifth Gym Leader first 4) The older three members of the group getting one starter each, with Ash evolving it all the way through the saga 5) A female companion who is initially undecided about her goal but then pursues one that prioritizes style over power The list goes on, but these are the most important points. XY IS AG 2.0. So, there’s a pretty good theory going around that the starters are themed around entertainment. I'm vaguely reminded of some pre-Gen 7 leaks that asserted Ash would travel with a girl who competed in sporting events. I wonder if that idea might actually be a reality now. |

I've heard that thought a lot, but I haven't actually heard any ideas on how Pokemon soccer games would work and still fit in the traditional gameplay or anything that vaguely resembles it. Based on the footage we've seen, it looks like the player character going out in uniform, and there's a traditional battle somewhere along the way. I do hope there's more to it than just a series of battles, or that would get pretty stale. |
