Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying the game... and it does provide a sort of "fresh air" to the franchise... but it is certainly one of my least favorite generations thus far. That feels a little bit extreme, but you're right about the pacing being ridiculous. But like Gavin said, it gets better. Reaching that threshold is annoying, but it does happen. Or... maybe that tells you how much I've loved previous games :P. The pacing is probably the worst part of the game, at least for me, so that should tell you I am enjoying Sun and Moon... I'm just seriously overleveled even with the Exp share turned off... and my Charjabug is still not a Vikavolt because I can't get to that area yet... :/ So I have a serious question here: Lillie took Cosmog from the Aether Foundation months ago and was found by Professor Kukui, correct? So shouldn't Kukui know that the Aether Foundation is crooked? Shouldn't the kahunas/trial captains know this through their connection to Kukui? I'm just... feeling like this whole situation was avoidable, considering both Team Skull's and the Aether Foundation's members are absolute pushovers.
Unlike in other generations, every person in the region knew where both groups were located and knew who was leading them... so what stopped a raiding party from wiping them out, considering three eleven-year olds were capable enough to do that on their own?

This generation has one of the better-written stories IMO. the gameplay is how it has ever been compared to x and y . The meta is pretty upbeat with all the very good in one stat and bad in the other type of legendaries which classification name I won't spoil. To be honest, if it wasn't for nostalgia gen 1 is probably the worse one, it's still good, but its the first one, had many things missing had to hold back on some things, overall pretty simple. It worked well as a great foundation tho! Gen 5 still stays my favorite tho. This is coming from someone who plays the games for the battles, mechanics, and statistics, so keep that in mind. I can't really say too much yet on the story (I'm at Poni Island atm, which means I just got to the Ultra Beast parts), but I can't really say it is anything stellar. You're a kid that gets forced into taking on the "gym leaders" like every other gen, you have a rival with... some sort of motivation to become stronger?, you beat people up with your powerful animals and you destroy evil organizations on the side. Same shtick, different color. Team Skull as a whole is like a reworking of Team Rocket, of people flocking to a strong trainer for various reasons and bullying whoever comes across their path. Some of the members are kinda cool and you sympathize with them, while others leave you with a headache. They all use like the same 6-7 Pokemon until you reach the leader which, lo and behold, is a "gym leader". After you beat their boss like 3 times, the organization "disappears".
Then there is Team Aether, the cliche "too good so it is bad" organization. You can tell there is something wrong with them at the very beginning of the game, they throw hints at the player without discretion, and for some reason Team Skull is working for them. ...Not really sure why that is yet, but hey, I haven't finished the game yet :P
Other than that, so far it has simply been a slow grind from island to island, fighting through bizarre trials and beating up my rival time after time, dealing with Lillie and her Cosmog problems, and chatting with the Professor as he appears out of thin air.
There are also fewer characters that I've come to love this time around, but I'm sure that will change once I hit the Elite Four stage (I already know who they are and all, but battling them myself might affect my stance on them).
Eh, generation 1 is still one of my favorite generations (and that might be heavily influenced by nostalgia), but generation 2 is #1 in my books. Generations 4 or 5 are kinda tied for the worst IMO (leaning towards 5th gen).

Generations 4 or 5 are kinda tied for the worst IMO (leaning towards 5th gen). you seem to be stuck with nostalgia or have spoiled yourself from the story which is hard not to do. there is no doubt sun and moon is a better-written story, if you like it or not is up to you, I don't like it either but the dedication put to it is far more than the other gens from a story writing perspective , i don't know if it's me getting older but they really tried to make the characters likeable and they do feel more like actual things, not just .jpgs. from previous gens the only characters we ever like are because of their teams such as red, Cynthia, and such. Lillie is no trainer yet so much is to like about her, even if I myself don't like her being there. This game for once in any Pokémon game I stopped and said, wait, this is an actual story, not just a setup for the show or to get to point a to b, and they really tied in these people to feel like they belong here. as compared to other gens it was ''HEY I AM GENERIC RIVAL, HEY I AM GENERIC FEMALE COMPANION, HEY IM PROFESSOR, WHATS UR GENDER, FILL MY DEX PLS, K, THX BYE. '' and yes they do feel like they were yelling at me in other gens. actually while writing this I realize what it is, the models the way the game now feels like what they forever aimed for, instead of little chibi models gives the game that extra spice of life. It may sound like I'm defending the game, I'm not, I'd put it after x and y in terms of enjoyment and that was pretty low on my list, but in story it's the first one to actually feel like one even if it was good or bad, it's for once a story not just a game that has only as climax legendary encounter session. Also im curious to see why so many people hate gen 5, they seem to be forgetting many amazing things that gen has done, way more than any of the rest(with exception of gen 4, 4 was for stats an amazing gen too). 67% of all Pokémon people like now is because of gen 5. what's that you like your multiscale Dragonite? hmm ,wonder what gen we have to thank for the concept of all hidden ability we pretty much consider as standard to have on Pokémon. not to mention moves, mechanics, weather changes, frequently items carried by Pokémon to this day. 5fth gen is the only gen where battle spirit still stayed in the other gens. even Megas lost its feel in this generation, though that's because gamfreak didn't add all of their mega stones.

I'm not saying there wasn't more effort put in for the story, I just personally wasn't a fan. As for characters, Blue, Silver, Lance, Jasmine, Blaine, Looker, Wattson... there were many characters such as these ones that I really liked, and not just because of their team, but their personality, their interactions with the player, and even the smallest of things such as their mannerisms (Wattson's laugh, man XD). There were great characters in previous games, though they obviously could have been much better if better writing had been there to back them up, but on their own they were fine. I don't know how many times Lillie has said "I know I'm not a Pokemon trainer or anything" or "I don't like seeing Pokemon get hurt, but...", but those two lines (roughly) are what I remember her for, that and she is child #2 of antagonist #2. Maybe I'll like her more later on since she just changed her appearance and all (and we all know that when a protag changes their style after wearing the same clothes all the time that they're undergoing a change in character).
Hau is Mr. Malasada man, whose goal is to become like Hala someday... for some reason we don't really know.
The Professor is probably one of the better characters IMO, just because of his unique mannerisms and his connection to the player, as well as being important throughout the main game.
Gladion is currently my favorite, and by far. He starts out being irritating and high-and-mighty, and later he is almost a friend, and I kinda root for the guy :P. Adding his relationship with his mother and his Type:Null... I like him a lot.
But none of the Trial Captains or the such really caught my attention. They're all just... there. They show up, you know you'll be fighting them later, they act all mysterious, and then later you kick their ass with a single Pokemon and you're on your way to the next. I don't even remember all of them, because some of them don't even act like Trial Captains!
And the Team bosses... well... they're also there.
So I've liked... two characters thus far. Three if you actually count Hau, because he's somewhere near "Bro Tier", ya know?
Yeah, I don't disagree with you about how the Pokemon games typically go. And I do feel like this is a step in the right direction... but for now it just feels... lacking? If that makes sense? Honestly, I'd guess that the main problem about Black and White, besides for some of the stupid Pokemon designs (I'm looking at you Vanillite, Trubbish...), the world was dark, dreary, dull, and at times it felt way too big to handle. Castelia City, for example... giant place, very confusing, easy to lose your way in, and it offers very little. What would you place that to, the general atmosphere? The ambiance? Anyway, most of what you listed for gen 5 seems to be much more important for a competitive player than a filthy casual such as myself lol. Heck, I had to look up what multiscale Dragonite was.

I can't say that question is entirely answered later in the game, but the events that occur should give you an understanding as to why this is.
