Shows I'd recommend for people both new and those still just wading the waters. The timeline abbreviations indicate which continuity the shows take place in. Most of them take place in the UC time line and everything else usually takes place in a separate continuity of its own.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED (CE Timeline): A modern reimagining of the origianl Mobile Suit Gundam (1979), this series shows on a war fought between the Earth and the space colonies (as most Gundam shows tend to). The cause of the conflict is genetic engineering of humans: designer babies that are born with natural talents that far exceed that of normal humans. The Earth consists mostly of 'Naturals' while the colonies are inhabited by 'Coordinators'. ZAFT, the military arm of the colonies gains the upper hand due to their development of Mobile Suits which are superior to every other type of weapon in their world. So the Earth Alliance secretly begins to develop their own mobile suits on a neutral colony. The stars of the show are Kira Yamato, a coordinator living among naturals on said neutral colony and his childhood friend, Athrun Zala, also a coordinator and the son of one of the political leaders of the colonies. When ZAFT discovers the Earth Alliance's mobile suits, the attack squad is led by Athrun. Being a coordinator with extraordinary abilities and reaction timing, Kira ends up piloting the Earth Alliance's mobile suit, the Srike Gundam, while 4 others are stolen by Athrun and his team. The 2 close friends are caught on opposite sides of the war and both go through a great deal of anguish about it. To be noted is the dub: It is quite good and I recommend watching this dubbed.
Mobile Suit Gundam (UC Timeline): The original show first aired in 1979. The premise is similar to that of Gundam SEED 9given the latter is a reimagining of the former) except without the genetic engineering. The colonies of Zeon declare independence from the Earth and wage war for it. Their superior mobile suits force the Earth to develop a mobile suit of their own (the titular Gundam) on a neutral colony. Amura Ray, son of the Gundam's scientist, ends up piloting it to save the colony when it is attacked by Zeon forces led by the mysterious Char. Though the series is old, it is still enjoyable and highly recommended. Alternately, you can watch the 3 compilation movies that cut out some of the questionable stuff and streamline the experience.
Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (UC timeline): Only recommened after watching the Mobile Suit Gundam (or its 3 movies) as it is a sequel to that, Zeta Gundam follows Kamille Bidan, a short tempered youth who ends up piloting the new Gundam Mark 2 when the colony he lives on is attacked by the Anti Earth Union Group (AEUG). Except in a twist, Kamille doesn't fight the AEUG. Instead, he joins up with them and ends up fighting against the Titans, an organization set upt to counter Zeon remnants but has since become extremely corrupt. Among the AEUG is the mysterious but all too familiar Quattro Bajeena, a man who's real identity is all too obvious for the audience and many of the cast members. This is my favourite Gundam show and I highly recommend it. Of course, to rtruly enjoy it, you must also commit to the original Gundam show which can be daunting. See the mobile suit in my profile and the man in my signature? They're the Hyaku Shiki and Quattro Bajeena, it's pilot. I've dedicated both my profile and signature to the show so you can tell how much I must love it.
Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (AD Timeline): This show follows the exploits of Setsuna, a member of Celestial Being, an organization that seeks to end wars by stepping in with their 4 Gundams and attacking and disabling both sides, which naturally earns them the ire of the world powers who eightfully see them as terrorists. The show is a great deal more political than other shows in the franchise as it shows how politics and wars affect each other and the reprecussions that follow. It is split into 2 seasons and also has a movie (which I honsetly wouldn't recommend for anything other than completion's sake).
Other shows to watch once you've waded the waters enough:
Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket (UC Timeline): A sidestory to the original show, this one focuses on a little boy called Alfred who befriends a crashed Zeon pilot named Bernie. There is not much action in this 5 episode series focuses on the tragedies of war.
Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory (UC Timeline): A setup for Zeta Gundam, this show is about Kou Urakia Earth Federation rookie using the Gundam GP01 to try and recover the Nuclear Warhead equipped Gundam GP02 stolen by Anavel Gato and Zeon remnants. It is 13 episodes long has strangely, has a lot of similarties with Top Gun.
Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny (CE Timeline): A sequel to Gundam SEED. War breaks out again between the colonies and Earth after a destroyed colony is forcibly dropped on Earth by coordinators angry about the results of the previous war. Shinn Asuka is the initial protagonist and is a pilot of the Impulse Gundam for ZAFT and the colonies. Also present are most characters from Gundam SEED including Kira and Athrun. This show is very controversial and opinions about its quality are divided but I love it.
Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (UC Timeline): This feature lenght movie serves as the conclusion to the bitter rivalry between Amura, the star of the original Gundam show and Char. I don't think it's good but it is a conclusion to the UC timeline.
All of the shows I've recommended here have dubs too and they all range from good to great.

So I just finished watching G Saviour. My final thoughts on it: Eh.
Not the best thing ever and most definitely could of been better but I didn't find it to be the the worst thing ever. Maybe if it was a short series of episodes where they expanded upon the actual setting a bit more then it could of been better.
So, yeah. It wasn't very good but I don't exactly hate the film for existing.
