The movie isn't even out yet and they're already commissioning a sequel.
Confident much?

That moment where you realize the movie is coming out in May and not March like you thought.
Even though it's currently April.
Yeah.

I really liked this movie. Definitely the best video game movie ever, even if the bar was really low to begin with. I was really engrossed by the world the film portrayed. Seriously, no product placements that wouldn’t make sense to appear in the world. This really felt like the Pokémon world we’ve always dreamed of living and exploring in. And honestly, it added a lot of depth on the adult side of things. Now it seems a lot more feasible that a world like this could thrive and flourish. Detective Pikachu and Tim Goodman were the best characters in the film. They had so much great chemistry and amazing moments together. Many of the other human characters were a bit lackluster, but these two and all the Pokémon were on point. Seriously, I never imagined a live action Pokémon movie could work, but it totally does! The story wasn’t the absolute best, but it was still enjoyable. I will say there were some parts that blew my mind, but let’s put that in the spoiler territory. Okay, so I have to say, my mind was blown when I realized the mountains were giant Torterra. That was amazing! I really wish we had gotten a better look at them, but still, I never would have thought of that.
And then the twist of the main bad guy combining everyone with Pokémon! My goodness! I was definitely kind of weirded out at first, but it definitely made a lot of sense and my mind was blown when I realized Detective Pikachu was Tim’s dad. I’m actually surprised they hadn’t done this in any of the games.
And then that Ditto and the eyes when it turned into people! Oh my goodness, I was shocked, terrified, and laughing when I saw that. I remembered seeing it turn into a dude towards the beginning, but I was not expecting that Ditto face. Which is kind of weird because we always associate that face with Ditto when it transforms, but it was originally only Duplica’s Ditto that couldn’t get the face right. Weird, but still awesome. Either way, definitely recommend this movie, if only because I hope to see more like it in the future.

Huh. So you guys liked the movie. And I thought this whole time it'd be a complete and laughable disaster.
Okay. I'll try it out too. I'm seriously glad Warner Bros. decided to be competent while making a live-action Pokemon movie, unlike the situation with a certain blue hedgehog...

Okay, so I watched the film. Surprise, surprise, I actually enjoyed it.
No, seriously, I actually did!
I didn't expect this kind of reaction from myself, but indeed I enjoyed it. If not for the plot, then for the guilty pleasure and nostalgia trip. From the moment the film was announced, I had very, very, VERY low expectations for it given Hollywood's track record with video game adaptations in the past, but it looks like Warner Bros. decided to be competent with this film and hire people who were clearly dedicated, loved Pokémon, and had the fanbase in mind as they made this. (Start taking notes, Paramount.)
The Pokémon were actually translated well into CGI for me. Sure, they felt a little out-of-place when they were put side-by-side with humans, but it was to be expected for a live-action Pokémon movie. The CGI animators did the best they could with the material they were given, and I think they excelled in their work. I actually had a lot of fun identifying all the Pokémon in Ryme City.
I LOVED all the references to the anime. Pikachu singing the original theme song was a nice moment, the remixes of the OS anime soundtrack were nice, and I have a hard time believing they didn't write the main female character and her Psyduck with Misty and her own Psyduck in mind. I felt these were really nice touches that appealed to my inner kid.
The sequence with the mountainous Torterra had to be my favorite part of the whole movie. The people working on this film HAD to have had an exclusive sneak peek to the Sword and Shield games, because there's NO WAY the announcement of Dynamax and the presence of those Torterra in the film were a total coincidence. On that matter, in the beginning of the movie, there was a brief shot of a region that I think Ryme City was supposed to be located in, and it looked SO MUCH like the Galar region. Coincidence? I think not.
And, of course, the main characters, Detective Pikachu and Tim Goodman, definitely carried this movie. Ryan Reynolds did a great job voicing Pikachu (I'm still waiting for all the Pokémon-related jokes in Deadpool 3!) and Tim's actor, Justice Smith, was pretty believable as a guy who met a talking Pikachu and is roped into a journey full of mystery and intrigue.
I actually think Warner Bros. picked the safest route adapting "Detective Pikachu", a spin-off game, rather than the main games. "Detective Pikachu" has a more Western-oriented premise (not sure if Japan likes police procedural shows), so it would've been easier for the filmmakers to craft a more believable and Americanized story around that source material, compared to making something out of the main storyline. I'd imagine if they adapted the original Red and Blue games, it would've turned into a "Pixels" situation.
*shudders*
Anyway, great film overall! I thought I'd hate it, but I didn't, and for that, I give them props. And I seriously would love to see what they do next in the sequel. I just hope their confidence doesn't turn into overconfidence, because now I don't want to see the prospect of a live-action Pokémon franchise turn into a complete and utter trainwreck.
