The title is self explanatory. Here is a compare and contrast of 'The Unbelievable Lightness of Seeing' and 'May versus Drew! Rivals Forever!!' (AG183).
Midnightmoon602 wanted me to do a comparison between the Japanese and the English Version, so here it is! Eventually I'll make a video for this episode just so that the Advancers can see the comparison for this episode visually, as some of the things I refer to, need visual context in order to understand fully.
This episode is supposedly the episode that 'confirms' Contestshipping to the eyes of the naive, but does it really?
When reading this, please be aware that this comparison treats the two episodes as their own separate continuity. For example, I call the character 'May' as May when referring to the English Dub of the character, and as Haruka, for the Japanese Original Character. There's going to be quite a bit of Japanese name usage here so, I hope you guys can keep up with me on that.
Let me start from this episode's beginning, in order to make sense of this.
So basically, May is feeling down after seeing Ash loose TWICE to Brandon, and now she's unsure of herself as a Coordinator.
The episode pretty much goes along the same, until noticeable dub edits start to make themselves clear to me.
Scott and Brock talk to each other on how May's battling style is similar to Ash's, and how she's noticing the disastrous truth from unintentionally mimicking such a style (All Out Offense against the defensive nature of Contest Battles).
However, the dub POORLY executes this subplot, making it something that can be easily glossed over by a ten year old who's watching.
For example:
Haruka/May: So Satoshi/Ash, how's your training going?
DIVERGENCE
JPN:
Satoshi: *Sigh* I just can't figure out how to battle my own way...
Eng:
Ash: It's not goin' so good... I just can't figure out what to do.
(merge)
Haruka/May: I see.
DIVERGENCE
JPN:
Masato: Well then... Why don't you have a practice battle together? Isn't that better than just training by yourselves?
Haruka: A battle with Satoshi?
Satoshi: That's Right! Let's do it Haruka!
Haruka: We Can't! (Yells at Ash)
*She pauses, noticing she might have hurt Ash's feelings, all the while, clenching on to her chest*
*Satoshi is surprised by her reaction*
I don't think it would be of much help if Satoshi battled me.
Satoshi: Haruka... (His tone shows he KNOWS something is wrong with Haruka)
*Prof. Okido barges into the scene*
ENG:
Max: I got it!
May: Huh?
Max: It sounds like you both need someone to work with. You'll train with May (looks at Ash), and she can work with you!
May: Me battle with Ash?
Ash: Hey! That's not such a bad idea!
May: No Way! (Just in a forceful tone)
Ash: Huh?
***Same thing I described earlier happens here, except in the ENG version it seems that May clenching her heart was just a character tic she does every now and then, rather than showing off the emotional baggage it carried with how the situation was handled in the JPN version***
May: What I'm trying to say... Is that I'm not as strong as you are...
Ash: Aw May! (In a disappointed tone).
***Prof. Oak breaks into the scene***
The bolded parts above pissed me off (pardon my language). Because it undermines the original intention of this episode, where May is noticing the unfortunate fact that being with Ash is not helping her with her career as a Pokemon Coordinator.
Next we have the changing of Drew's attitude. This is the scene after Ash got encouraging words from his own Pokemon (The FIGHT! Poster, if anyone remembers), Misty's Lure, and Gary's photo fromt the Sinnoh region.
Satoshi/Ash: BlahBlahBlah I'm Pumped! BlahBlahBlah (this was after his daydream of Gary)
DIVERGENCE
JPN:
Haruka: Rivals huh? (In reference to Prof. Okido talking about Shigeru, Satoshi's former rival)
*Roselia walks in*
Masato: It's a Roselia!
Haruka: Isn't this...?
*Shu walks in*
Shu: Yo! I'm surprised to see you here. (calm, and friendly)
Haruka: Shu!
***Nurse Joy fangasms at Shu***
DIVERGENCE
ENG:
May: Well lucky them...
*Roselia Walks in Blah*
Max: Roselia!
May: But you can't be here alone.
*Drew walks in blah*
Drew: Right. Hard to imagine running into you guys here. (arrogantly)
May: Drew!
***Nurse Joy Fangasm etc. etc.***
You know, for an episode focusing on May's recovery as a Coordinator, Drew's tone here does not help as opposed to Shu's chill demeanor.
Anyways, the next thing I'm going to ramble about is the scene after the Joygasm. May and Drew are in the contest arena with no one present.
DIVERGENCE
JPN:
Haruka: It surprised me. Just when I was thinking of you, you suddenly appear.
Shu: Thinking? (In a confused manner)
Haruka: No! That's not what I meant! (A bit embarrassed, but restrained, before regaining her composure)
Haruka: Earlier, we were talking about Satoshi's rivals, and then I thought my rival would be you.
Shu That's an honor to hear that. So what have you been doing since then?
Haruka: Me? …What about you Shu? What have you been doing?
Shu: There is only one thing a Coordinator defeated in battle should do. (Feeds Roselia a Pokeblock) Working on himself and his Pokemon. Preferably with a new partner too.
Haruka: I...
Shu: Still can't forget the match with Saori.
Haruka: *Gasp* (Shocked)
Shu: You've found your own weakness, but have no idea how to overcome it. (Turns head) Something along those lines?
*Haruka nods her head solemnly*
Shu: Well then, why don't we have a battle?
Haruka: Eh? Why are you asking me all of a sudden? (with unsure feelings)
Shu: Just because... They have a wonderful stage here, and I still want revenge for that match at the Grand Festival.
Haruka: But... I... (She looks down)
Satoshi: Do it, Haruka. (With an understanding of the situation. It's hard for me to describe in words without you guys actually watching the moment when Ash says that. Satoshi knows Haruka's problem, and doesn't seem offended at all that she'd rather battle with her actual rival, than himself)
Haruka: Huh? (slightly surprised at Ash's response)
Satoshi: You've been challenged by a rival.
Masato: That's Right!
Takeshi: Besides, isn't it better to get moving instead of being lost in thoughts?
Haruka: Of course...
*Scene with a triple take on Haruka, then Shu, then Haruka again*
Haruka: Okay, I'll try!
ENG:
May: You really gave me a shock back there. See, I was just thinking about you when all of a sudden, there you were.
Drew: Were they good thoughts? (smugly)
May: Ah!!! Come on!! Of course they were! (Completely embarrassed. There's no restraint with May, as opposed to Haruka)
May: We were just talking about rivals, so naturally, I'd think of you!
Drew: Well, I'm honored. So how have you been doing after the loss?
May: Huh? Alright, I guess... How about you? After your loss?
Drew: I guess I've been doing what just about any coordinator does. After a loss I mean, they make sure their Pokemon are well taken care off. And hopefully with a new friend.
May: Hm... New friend?
Drew: You're still holding on to your loss with Solidad aren't you?
May: Oh? (As if she was discovering a new thought)
Drew: That means you've discovered your weak point. But now I bet you're not feeling too sure as to what to do to overcome it. (Turns head) Tell the truth, am I close?
May: (Softly) Mhm...
Drew: Okay. (Gets up) I think we should have a battle.
May: Huh? Drew, what for?
Drew: I dunno. It's just... Since we have that great stage and everything... I think after the Grand Festival, it can clear the air.
May: You think? Maybe...
Ash: Gooo for it May!
May: Huh?
Ash: Sounds like a great idea to me! (He sounds like he doesn't even know what's really going on.)
Max: For sure!
Brock: Get up and move around May, and make sure to give that brain of yours a liiitle time off.
May: Yeah you think?
Triple Take of Drew and May blah
May: Ooookay! It's a deal!
Alright, first of all, with this scene, the beginning was practically dub tailored for Contestshipping in terms of tone. The dialogue edits made me all the more disappointed, as it gears May towards Contestshipping by default. The Japanese episode has her 'unsure' about Drew's feelings and is fine viewing him as a rival.
I also don't like the fact that May's subtlety is diminished with May's English voice actor. In the English version, she sounds very spacey, as if she's confused, in an idiot-like manner, as opposed to Haruka, whom knows her problem, but can't find the words to describe it until Shu exposed it to her.
Lastly, I'm going to make note of Ash's reaction when he tells May to 'Goooo for it!'. He just sounded plain obnoxious here, as opposed to Satoshi's determination for Haruka. Again, it's hard to explain in words. Maybe when I post my comparison video in the month of May, that everything will be cleared up.
The last scene is going to be a bit brief, but I'm short on time.
I'm referring to the 'Sunset Scene' in this part. The part where Harley, interrupts Haruka and Shu. There's MORE edits I'd like to discuss, but this part was VERY noticeable to me in my opinion.
JPN:
Harley: "You two."
May: "Harley-san!"
Harley: "What are you doing? This looks suspicious."
May: "What are you talking about? We weren't doing anything..."
ENG:
Harley: "How touching!"
May: "Ahhhh! It's Harley!" (Ridiculously flustered)
Harley: "It's daaaaaangerous, two kids alone like this!"
May: "C-c-come on! We were just talking! Really!" (Self Explanatory)
Interesting to note that in both versions, Drew isn't phased by this at all. Only having a blank face when looking at Harley, reinforcing the fact that he's the rose wielding pretty boy archetype that's common in Japan. I really don't think he's interested in romance.
Anyways, I'll add more to this later, when I have time. Unfortunately, school starts tomorrow for me, and I can't hang around this place as often as I like anymore, at least not until May, when school is out for me.
