Most of the time the books will always be superior, but some people may find reading books too hard to they watch the movie to make it easier or they see no point reading the books if you've seen the movie.
I have a feeling the 50 Shades movies are going to be better than the books.

I'm a big fan of the Lord of the Rings books but the movies are so much better. The book tends to ramble on and on and caontains many, many pointless characters. The movies streamline everything just perfectly.

I couldn't even finish the Lord of the Rings books. They were just so boring. I read through the first one just fine, but I only got halfway through the second. Although, I did enjoy the Hobbit and I am looking forward to the trilogy for it.

Don't really have too many to compare but two that haven't been mentioned for me are Jurassic Park and The Lost World.
I saw both movies when I was young and bought The Lost World at my grade school book fair while I didn't read the first until a few years later. I found The Lost World book much better than the movie even though the movie wasn't bad in the first place, it just worked better and was more suspenseful. For Jurassic Park it was a toss up, the book was a lot darker but I think since the movie was such a classic that it's hard to overturn it. It was also the way John Hammond was in the two versions that wasn't as great.

Most time I pick book over movie, but sometimes they're both equally great in their own way.
Take Catching Fire for example. The book has Katniss's every thought and small, descriptive things that make us all happy. The movie, however, offered a bit more urgency, since it had to be compressed.this same compression did force it to leave out a few details and change the pace a little. In particular, I feel the reveal of the twist on the Games was handled best in the movie because we saw the reactions of everyone right away.
It really all comes down to your preference of writing and movie style. If you can't slog through 500 pages of manuscript the movie will probably appeal to you, but if the acting/directing is poor, those 500 pages look a lot better.
