It would be like in the Animé.
But, You have to go school.
So it would be hard if you try to go on a journey, If you did it in the summer.
But, If you did it in the summer, You would have less than 3 months.
So, School and Jobs would be in the way.
Unless, They use the Pokémon for work.
Well, It would be hard to spend time with them, if you're really busy.

Pokemon would probably be considered a sport like any other but you'll probably have to pass exam and stuff like that to get license and the age limit would be higher like 14 to have a starter Pokémon.
And journeys would only be in the summer. Pokémon trainers would have restrictions like in Gengar's story Civil War.
Then we would probably have environmentalist who start constant fights about Pokémon and habitats.

And let's not forget PETA. They nowadays bitch about dogs on leash and people riding on horses... just IMAGE how many bricks they'd shit if pokemon battles were made a sport and people walked around with them stored in little balls...

Let us take a moment to think here. If Pokemon were reaal and they had laways exisred in this world with us and our other creatures we probably learnt how train them when we learnt to domesticate animals. Seeing has how in both the games, the anime and the 30+ manga adaptions the series have Pokemon have been shown to live with other people as pets it suddenly doesn't seem so farfetched. (No that wasn't a pun)
