3DS XL is worth the extra money. In my opinion, holding an XL vs a regular one is a good reason to consider getting the 3DS XL. Also, the playing a 3DS game on the XL is so cool since the screen size is bigger. Also, the battery life on an XL lasts longer than a regular 3DS

The 3DS XL is technically superior to the 3DS. Better battery life, larger screens and more comfort in general.

The only reason to buy a normal 3DS now is if money is a concern or if you're worried about portabaility. The normal 3DS is certainly more portable than the XL, though not by much.

Additionally, there's the 2DS coming out. The 3D on the 3DS is not the biggest draw so the 2DS is also interesting. Lack of clamshell design means that the screens are not as well protected as the 3DS/XL and is definitely not nearly as portable as the other 2.
