Image by VonnaBeeeOkay, so here's a little topic that I'm interested in discussing: rivals. From Gary "Mother-F*****'" Oak to Hugh and N, there have been all kinds of different rivals in the games, anime, and manga. Here, I want to talk about our favorite and least favorite rivals, what makes a good rival, and other stuff like that. To start, here's a question: Who was your favorite rival in just the Pokemon games? In my case, I have to say that the most interesting game rival was Silver. Silver was the first real game rival that I had. Sure, I played against Gary Oak in Yellow Version, but I never got really far. So, when I got Silver Version and found out that this guy actually stole one of the starter Pokemon from Professor Elm's lab, that's when things got serious. Then, as I learned about his whole deal involving strong Pokemon, I got even angrier. He just really knows how to bring out the player's aggression. Plus, to learn that he was actually Giovanni's son shocked me even more. I mean, Silver wants to destroy Team Rocket, an organization created by his own father. That's pretty epic. What about you guys? Who was your favorite in-game rival? It can be anyone from the handheld main games to the few console games that they had.

Hugh. Hugh Hugh Hugh.
Where to begin? This boy is fabulous! Finally, a rival that I didn't hate/didn't associate with the villainous team! He had a sense of purpose throughout the story, he wasn't there simply to be your rival. I know other rivals have gone through character development, but I feel as if that was secondary to their role as rival. Being rival was secondary for Hugh, I believe, which made me like him at every encounter. He had devotion and utter love for his Pokemon and his sister(d'awwww!). And I totally ship him with Rosa.
Simply put, Hugh is an all-around fantastic, in-depth rival.

I haven't get a chance to play other games, so I have to say Silver and Gary. Both of them are really challenging to beat in the game.
I mostly dislike Silver, but like Pichu said. He went bad guy to good guy and very interesting. Gary was a little jerk while playing a game, but he is okay right now.

All right, I'll just bring up another topic to get things moving. Who was your favorite anime rival? This one is a toss-up between a lot of different rivals. I mean, Ash has had some terrible rivals who lost their potential to be great like Trip, but then, he's also had some really good rivals like Gary. However, there is one rival that outshines them all in my book. That's right. It's Paul. He was like the Silver that Ash never got. He had this whole deal about having only the strongest of Pokemon. Then, he pissed off everyone, especially Ash and the audience. And the biggest thing that made us all hate him? Releasing Chimchar. That's when things got really serious. Ash and his battles grew more intense; especially in the League battle. However, by the end of the DP series, you kind of had to like him.

Gamewise - Silver, Blue, Cheren and Hugh. They all pretty much had a motive for wanting to get stronger... well they all did, but I liked those the most.

PichuAuraGuardian19 you could not be any more right. Paul was a breath of fresh air, considering most characters, excluding villains, are goody goody and whatnot. But he had depth and development. He was the polar opposite of Ash, which put an interesting perspective on everything he did and everything they disagreed on. Overall one of the best characters, period.
