Here's the thing the American Government love to fuss about; do video games actually cause violence? Or are they ignorant to the fact that there are other variables that lead to violence?
I want to hear what you guys think.
Me? I honestly believe that too many video games that are violent can cause some sort of aggression within a person. However, will it be the sole reason why that person is violent? No.
Other variables are most likely the case here: being bullied, abusive parents, dangerous neighborhood, drugs, alcohol abuse, and traumatizing memories. Video games are an escape from reality and when people rely on it too much, it can be damaging.
Same can be said for any source of medium. Whether it's music to even books.
All I can say is, it depends on the wellbeing of the person and their surroundings; more so than video games. Video games can still be a reason, but not to an extent of the background that person lives in.

^I agree. It depends on each person's personality. It's true that there are videogames that can actually promote some violent activity, but it's not EVERY game, and it's NOT the only reason why people who play it are violent.

Yeah, I don't think video games make people violent. I mean, if that were true, everyone who plays Angry Birds on their iPhones would be a serial killer.

Im actually going to say yes. In modern society kids tend to mimic certain activities including video games. The other day my little cousin saw me playing Black Ops 2, and the next day he was playing with our neighbors, pretending to shoot each other with sticks.

You do realize that Pokemon is a video game, right?

Here is the thing about violence; there is no one reason why people are violent or become violent in the first place. Many factors contribute to violence. Furthermore, things like this will vary from person to person. No two people are the same, so the reason why one kid is violent may be vastly different from why another kid is violent.
Do I think video games cause violence? No. Plenty of people play violent video games and are not even remotely violent, so I think it's a stretch to say that people become violent as a result of playing violent video games.
Can they be a trigger? Sure. An impressionable child can emulate the violent behavior he/she sees in a video game, or someone who is mentally unwell may also do the same thing. The point is, there are already existing reasons why these games may trigger violent behavior in these individuals.
Why do people blame video games on violence? Because it's easy. It's easy to blame violent video games for causing violence and aggression in people rather than the more complex, underlying factors that make some people violent.

Kids have been pretending to shoot each other since who knows when. G.I. Joe, anyone? Didn't any of you play army, cowboys, or cops and robbers as children? Kids didn't learn those games from video games all those years ago xD

Can't compare little kids with pokemon to huge guys with rifles in my opinion Yes, but people like PETA could say that Pokemon encourages animal fighting.

That may be true but PETA in my opinion can sometimes exaggerate. And honestly what's wierd to me is this. I work with my uncle at his Anime/Video Game store, and after awhile I noticed kids don't go for Pokemon anymore but for more violent games. And you cant imagine the tantrums they make, so my question is, are parents sometimes at fault?

Can't compare little kids with pokemon to huge guys with rifles in my opinion Yes, but people like PETA could say that Pokemon encourages animal fighting. PETA, PETA: The same people who usually outright kill animals instead of putting them into shelters? The same who also gave money away to an eco-terrorist group? The ones who downright cry out for attention whenever possible? Please, take what they say for granted. Yes, Pokemon, if you like too deep in, it has animals fighting. The thing is, the games and the people involved talk about Pokemon being all about understanding them and befriending them. Battling is for sport that both the Pokeon, especially in the manga and anime having more emotion, and trainer want to do. Though, I do like how N, no matter how easily manipulated he was, did at first believe Pokemon should be free and not "caged" up to do what the trainer wants. PETA are notorious for being outright crazy in their approaches. Yes, but people like PETA could say that Pokemon encourages animal fighting. Parents are, indeed, at fault. If you're not properly taking care of your child and letting play Call of Duty and cussing out a storm; you shouldn't be a parent at all. It may be harsh, but the reality is - you're not being a proper parent. My parents always talked to me about whenever I got games that had guns, violence, and murder. Example would be that they talked to me about Assassin's Creed 2 and didn't like it that you killed people. I had to explain that you may be an assassin, but you were also a man on revenge for the murder of his father and two brothers but finds a deeper meaning to their murders. I'm glad they had opposition, that means they worried for my wellbeing. If a parent just buys their kid the next Call of Duty without being opposed, that means they need to get involved in their child's life. It still won't mean their kid will be a murderer, but it can also mean that kid may not behave well in real life.

I wasn't agreeing with them. I was just saying an example of how some people might try to say that Pokemon promotes violence. Obviously, I don't agree with them.

Exactly. I get extremely shocked that a 7 year old would rather get a shooting game than more peaceful games like Mario or Pokemon.
