I stand by my statement. I can't deny that he murders both Brock and Misty, but while he may be a tank against most of them doesn't mean he can kill them. Cause most of those gyms also resist him. Every time I chose Bulbasuar I found myself using a caught Pokemon as my primary and him as support around the time I get to Lavender Town. There's just not enough types that are weak to his attacks and so he just sits there and takes the damage while doing sub-par to the opponent. In a pvp 6v6 Venusaur is a stupidly good special tank, but when going through the game it's not the type you want to use as the first Pokemon you throw out.
Charmader and Squirtle though do that job quite well, they learn attacks that are super effective against a wide range of opponents and are fast/powerful enough to kill them before they do too much damage. Thus lessening time needed to go the the Pokemon Center.
