Because they were using assets from these companies without consent. Let me give you an example: I make a game, with my own lines of code, my own assets, and it takes me well over a few years to develop and release it. As the owner of the intellectual property (IP), if someone goes and uses my own line of code, my assets, and all that to make their own game; then I have every right to sue. If I don't combat them, then that means I no longer have the rights to what I own and anybody can take my assets and codes for themselves. Nintendo is a company that is strict with their IPs. That's why they work with other companies, under their supervision, to work on new games or make it themselves. If a group of people, say the Project M Dev Team (PMDT) were to just take it and do stuff without consent or approval of the company in charge of all those assets, then Nintendo would lose the rights and it would make them lose money. That's why they do Cease and Desists on various fan projects. They do it to protect what they own. You wouldn't like it if your own work was being published and you didn't make dime off it. So why should they? I love Project M, I really do, but I'm not going to defend it, nor the developers, if they got sued. They knew that too and decided to disband. Yeah, this is basically the best reason why this sort of thing is even a thing in the first place. Good summary here. Although it should probably be stated that in the case of Project M, it's a bit of a different situation than having your work being published and being profited by someone else (although, arguably, this happens in the game industry on a daily basis anyway, as it's publishers that typically own the IP, not the developers themselves, unless they happen to be one and the same--but I digress). Namely, they don't profit off of this at all, so one could construe an argument that it falls under fair use. Not to mention the fact that precedent exists for game companies allowing and even encouraging game mods. Skyrim is perhaps the quintessential example of this. But I'm no lawyer. My interpretation is probably completely wrong in the legal sense, but that sort of murkiness is likely why they felt it was better to be safe than sorry. In some ways, it can be, as the definition of Fair Use is extremely vague. That's why many companies went to oust Let's Players on Youtube, to which they combatted back. The entirety is set in the grey area, for reasons I'm not sure. However, my best bet is that it's because the industry is still new. It's still evolving and no one can truly define it just yet. However, just because it's not being profited, doesn't mean those who play don't as well. VideoGameBootCamp, VGBC, is run under GimR, a man who hosts various Smash Bros. tournaments. He hosts them on Twitch and makes money off it. He and various other streamers host, or rather used to, Project M tournaments. However, that's not fair use as you're profiting off a technically illegal game that's not given the approval by Nintendo. In order to save face, not lose their jobs, and still make money while being in good-standings, both the streamers AND Twitch removed PM from ever being streamed. The whole thing is grey, but everyone in the scene knows it's illegal regardless. The only ones who don't think that are the PM players on /r/SSBPM. But to be fair, they're all entitled shits that think they deserve it.

Aye, very much so. Intellectual property in general is hard to deal with nowadays since copying it is extremely easy, unlike physical property. I do understand the reaction there, but I really don't see why hosting vanilla Smash tournaments is that much better. They'd still be "profiting" in the same way. But I suppose the difference would be whether or not it was approved, and come to think of it, there were spats from Nintendo in the past about even vanilla tournaments. (EVO comes to mind.) Comes down to avoiding lawsuits altogether instead of winning them, I suppose, which is definitely a wise option. Ad hominem doesn't suit you, man.

The reason why vanilla Smash is better to profit off of now, is because Nintendo approves and allows them to, via sponsoring these events such as APEX, EVO, and TBH. Back then, yes, Nintendo had an issue with EVO 2013, but not anymore and have now been the big sponsors for these events. And fuck that, I'm part of that subreddit so I have my opinions on those people. Hell, some even agree, like Warchamp of PMDT. I follow him on Twitter and he just deals with people going after him and various other developers in the team. It's stupid, it's petty, and they deserve the least amount of respect ever.

But there's something about that reason that seems really odd to me. Kinda hard for me to shake for some reason... Fair--I guess I just don't look highly upon arguments associated with fallacious reasoning. It's a defense mechanism, I suppose, so I'm probably the only one who even cares about that anyway.

Cloud is a solid 7.5/10 for me. I might use him as a secondary.

So, we've got some new characters. Bayonetta and some guy called Corrin from Fire Emblem. I honestly didn't expect Corrin to be in the game until the next SSB but to add him before the English release of the game was interesting. I'm sure the japanese fans are happy since the game has been out over there for like nearly six months. I've been avoiding any spoilers to FE: Fates for 6 months and seeing Corrin in smash will make the wait a little more easierBut I can see why they added Corrin in a business perspective. It's a slight insentive to make people interested in the game. I mean if Fire Emblem Awakening didn't sell so well we might never have any FE characters in smash ever again. But yet again, the salt in the SSB fandom is too strong right now so reasoning with anyone that actually thought Shovel Knight or Goku would be in the game is suicide. PLUS CORRIN IS HALF BADASS DRAGON. I can't wait to main him/her after Yoshi. Corrin is by far the most unique FE character added right now as half their moveset is him/her attack with his dragon powers WHICH I LOVEEEE. It's refreshing. AND BAYONETTAAAAAA I LITERALLY SCREAMED WHEN MY BROTHER SHOWED ME THE TRAILER. -AHEM- ~FLY ME TO THE MOON AND LET ME PLAY AMONG THE STARS LET ME SEE WHAT SPRING IS LIKE ON JUPITER AND MARS IN OTHER WORDS TAKE MY WALLET IN OTHER WORDS SAKURAI HOLD ME.~

I love the characters in the games. But I feel like I'm going to be one of those people where I'll accidentally make either two women or two men end up marrying each other because I will forget that will be a thing in this game. Watch me.

I just finished housing one of the best Smash 4 Argentininan players, he was cool. Was fun and learned a lot from him, especially how to deal with Shiek. Though, I probably won't ever house again.

Man, rewatching the Versus VOD from Saturday and I'm still in shock how Deafstar beat a lot of people with Cloud. Fuck, he was so good. Though, once people find how to fight Cloud, Cloud won't make it past Top 16 at most... unless you're Zer0 or Nairo.
