New picture, I made it.
Let’s see now, we haven’t had a Goudaquisition in a long time! To me, that’s a damn sin! I really need to be the beacon of gaming in these forums! We’re positively dying here and I must give it a breath of life once more! So anyway, let’s discuss a topic I’ve been thinking about for a long time – a very long time to be honest! What’s the topic? Well, my dear reader(s), why don’t you check the damn title? It’s right there! Lazy twits you all are.
So in all seriousness, let’s discuss the Wii U sales now. Obviously, unless you’ve been living under a rock, the Wii U hasn’t been selling as well. Hell, the PS Vita, the damn Vita for Christ’s sake, is outselling it! In Japan, nearly 2 weeks ago, when Pikmin 3 first came out, the sales jumped from the usual 14k to 22k. However, it came down back to 14k. What about the game? Well, it’s sold about 120k. Not bad, but not good.
The Wii U, in Nintendo’s quarterly report, has been shipped 160K units from April to June! 90k from Japan, 60k from America, and 10k from “the rest of the world”. Notice the last bit, “the rest of the world”. That’s downright pitiful!
Hell, Tesco and ASDA, which is owned by Wal-Mart in the UK, has downright dropped the Wii U until they stated they will continue stocking the Wii U. Tesco even threatened that they might pull it out if the sales reflect it. Other companies even refuse to stock the Wii U.
Where does the blame lie on? Nintendo? Other gaming developers and publishers? Retail outlets? How about all of the above?
First and foremost, I’m a Nintendo fanboy through and through. Always have and always will, however I will call them out on it. I’ve called out on Sony and Microsoft with the amount of stupidity they have done. Right now, I have to pin the blame on Nintendo.
Before you throw tomatoes, call out for my death, and wish to rape my sister and mother, hear me out. Nintendo has always had a rocky relationship with 3rd Parties. From the NES to the Wii and Wii U, they’ve been a bit rocky with them. In the NES era, they’ve outright restricted companies to make 5 games a year. Some were so pissed, like Konami, they made a separate company to make more games.
Then the SNES came out and the Genesis was its rival, many developers preferred the Genesis as Nintendo tried to control them on many aspects. With the Genesis and Sega, everything was lax. The sales for most 3rd party games were on the Genesis than the SNES. However, the SNES still won because Sega just fucked themselves over.
Then came the N64, Sega Saturn (I bet you all forgot), and the PS1. With PS1 being a CD- based console, people flocked over to it. N64 was more powerful, but it faced severe CPU bottlenecks, and it was still using cartridges. Now, CD’s allowed more storage than the cartridge, which is why Final Fantasy VII came out on PS1 instead of the N64. Plus, the CEO of Nintendo made developing of the N64 difficult, to which is why so many games suffered in quality.
Then the Gamecube came out. I love the Gamecube, but with lack of online, a crappy mini-disc that was only 1.5GB, and it’s childish appearance; many developers turned away from it.
Wii was just an overclocked Gamecube, but with crappy online, and a motion controller. This led to an influx of many casual games such as minigame compilations. Even some of Nintendo’s games such as Sin and Punishment 2 bombed. The only games that made it were Just Dance and many casual games, along with some other niche titles and mainly Nintendo games such as Mario, Donkey Kong, Metroid Prime (barely), and Zelda.
With the Wii U, they’re getting there… yet not really. EA doesn’t support them and all the Wii U has been getting are ports such as Mass Effect 3 (with the Trilogy coming out on other systems), Batman: Arkham City, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, etc. All these games came out a year ago before the Wii U launched! Some of them are even gimped, look at Sniper Elite V2. Deus Ex is improved, but it’s coming back to the other consoles, same with Ninja Gaiden 3. NG3 was horrendous, but it was fixed on the Wii U…. then brought to the other consoles as well.
Even Need for Speed: Most Wanted was an upport, but using PC textures. However, it bombed at 10k. Many games continue selling less than 150k. Activision was reportedly upset at the lack of sales for Black Ops II on the Wii U.
Hell, right now, many games that are coming out are not even announced for the Wii U! Only games like Watch Dogs, Batman: Arkham Origins (Without multiplayer), and some others are coming but through contractual agreements that were made before.
Nintendo needs to fix their relations; otherwise the Wii U will just sell even worse.
Let’s look at Target, a retailer, they had an ad on their catalogue about the Wii U. However, they made a mistake. They made it seem the Wii U is an accessory… to the original Wii! What?!
Let’s look at Tesco and ASDA, they bailed out and even had been accused of not even attempting to show the Wii U off to the consumers, which led to the bad sales and shipments.
For game developers, they gimp their ports so much that it’s no surprise that they don’t sell! They then say, “Our games don’t sell!” … they didn’t even try to put everything in it! Let’s look at Sniper Elite V2, basically a slightly upgraded, graphically, game that lacks the online and the online co-op. They then justified it by saying it was about the graphics. Fuck off.
Then Arkham Origins doesn’t have the online because Warner Bros is trying to give it to the consoles with the more install base. If the game bombs, they’ll blame the Wii U for the lack of sales, not accounting they’ve made a horrendous port to begin with.
Ubisoft sold a mediocre game, Zombi U, that slightly bombed. That’s why Rayman Legends isn’t a Wii U exclusive anymore. Then they have the gall to delay the Wii U game, which was already finished, to later this year to coincide with the releases of the PS3, 360, Vita, and PC version… what the Hell?
In all honesty, it’s all of their faults. However, with Pikmin 3 coming out on Sunday, August 4, 2013, we might see if the Wii U will sell. We just need more damn advertisements! In all honesty, I want the Wii U to sell, however with all these issues – it’s a very rocky obstacle.
