So the Pokemon you receive from a person's Friend Safari are determined randomly depending on their friend code. These are the same for everyone who uses that code and cannot be changed. It doesn't matter whether the person whose code it is owns Pokemon X or Y.

Keep watching. He's an experienced trainer who keeps his usual 'positive' traits (Caring about Pokemon a lot, etc) but ditches his noobness that he had in BW.

Bunnelby wouldn't be in his expertise, and it was his first battle with the Pokemon, compared to Pikachu that should be at... what? Level 100? Eh, I still think he's on the weak-side. |

Gym leaders are known to make use of weaker Pokémon. Plus, technically Bunnelby was still in his range of expertise. He may not have used Electric moves, but he knew how to block them. |
