What is Monster Hunter?
Monster Hunter is an Overworld, Action-Adventure game that has you hunting Monsters.
Is there any story to Monster Hunter?
Usually, the stories are all similar - a monster terrorizes a village you're in and the people test to see whether you can defeat that monster by sending you to do quests that involve hunting other monsters.
Is that all to it, just hunting Monsters?
Just about. However, to enrich the experience, each monster all live in a way that whatever attacks they do will feel new. They will do combos that may appear different than the last time you fight them. Plus, when you defeat the monster, you're able to 'carve' their bodies for hide or bones needed to get armor and weapons.
Why are there different monsters on covers for the games?
They are the 'Flagship' monster for that game. Meaning they're the new monster to be brought in that, may or may not have, a focal point to the story.
Why haven't I heard of this series before if you say it caught the attention in Japan like Pokémon?
While it has caught Japan's attentions, it hasn't done the same in the West. They usually barely hit the millionth mark, with the exception of Monster Hunter Tri for the Wii - at 1.03 Million sales as of 2012. That game came out in 2010 for the West.
How many systems has it come out for?
So far, it has been on the PS2, PS3, PSP, Wii, Wii U, 3DS, Xbox 360 (Japan only), iOS, and PC (Japan, Korea, and Taiwan only).
How many games are there in the series?
Monster Hunter's main series goes by "Generations", so here is the list of the games by Generations:
1st Generation: Monster Hunter (PS2), Monster Hunter G (PS2 - Japan Exclusive), and Monster Hunter Freedom/Portable (PSP).
2nd Generation: Monster Hunter Dos (PS2 - Japanese Exclusive), Monster Hunter Portable 2nd/Freedom 2 (PSP), and Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G/Freedom Unite (PSP)
3rd Generation: Monster Hunter Tri (Wii), Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (PSP and PS3), and Monster Hunter Tri G/Ultimate (3DS and Wii U).
4th Generation: Monster Hunter 4
Wait a minute! What does the 'G' stand for?
In Monster Hunter, and a staple to many Capcom games, there's usually a "harder" version of the previous game. G is a rank in the game.
Okay, so what's G-Rank?
G-Rank is where the monsters get an added bonus in difficulty. They will do new moves exclusive to that rank, their health is much higher, and their attacks will do more damage. When you defeat the G-Rank monsters, you will gain the G-Rank Armor for that specific monster. G-Rank is only for games that have the 'G' in the title.
Since Monster Hunter G and Monster Hunter Dos aren't for the West, how can I play them?
Well, that's easy! They're on the PSP! Monster Hunter G is also Monster Hunter Freedom on the PSP. Monster Hunter Dos is Monster Hunter Freedom 2. All the PSP Monster Hunter games have come out for the West.
Great! So I can play online with them?
That's the tricky thing, with Sony doing the Ad-Hoc only, it's a tricky situation even getting online. Plus, some servers for the games might have already been shut down. Monster Hunter Tri, for instance, will have its servers shut down after Monster Hunter Tri Ultimate comes out for the West.
Is the game any easy?
As the series progressed, some stuff has been toned down for new audiences. However, the entire game isn't toned down. You will rage and you will want to quit. But, don't. There is no shame in defeat and you will learn from it.
Can't I just get online and learn from there?
You... can. But, it's not really recommended. You will have no armor when you begin, unless you're playing the G ones, and you may find that people will not play with you because of your rash decision to get online. Learn from the single player component and then get online. By that I mean... beat the single player or get nearly half done in the single player before going online - trust me, it will help you a lot.
Why should I listen to you?
I have been playing Monster Hunter since Tri, so I'm not experienced compared to someone who has played from the beginning. However, I have talked to people, watch videos, read everything I can, and even played Monster Hunter Freedom Unite - so I think I know what I am talking about.
Have some videos!
