Would be quite strange to have an arc without a Pokémon evolution xD
However, there's still the question what will happen after that arc :/

It's good that Charizard appears
I was disappointed that he didn't have an appearance during the Sinnoh league
Moreover, you have to wonder how Charizard finds Ash all the time xD
The fire-dragon is somewhere in Jotho in the Charicific valley (right?) and flies the whole way to Unova ^^

Well, if Charizard had returned during the Sinnoh League, he would've taken all of the attention away from Infernape and Sceptile. Plus, it's not like Squirtle and Bulbasaur came to Sinnoh, either. I think at the time, the writers didn't want to bring back Ash's original three like they had in the Battle Frontier. It's more special to do it every once in a while instead of every league.

Right, but that's perhaps the main reason why he lost the Unova league so badly
Let's add another legendary to the list that Charizard had battled ^^

Well, to be honest, Ash NOT using his old Pokemon in every league makes it so he's not overpowered. I mean, out of all of the Pokemon in the Unova League that he faced, none of them could really compete with his old Pokemon. Plus, Ash actually doesn't have contact with Kanto anyway. I mean, we've only seen him communicate with Professor Juniper, so that must mean that there's no way to really contact Kanto from Unova.

You're right on that
Nevertheless, the Unova league was the weakest of all leagues so far
Perhaps the producer just wanted to rush this whole league thing when they realized that their concept (with everything new like you said) doesn't work, so they look forward to that N-arc
