Transformers 4 - Age of Extinction is the best Transformers movie ever made. That's right, I said 'ever', meaning I consider it to be better than the classic G1 Transformers movie.
So let's talk about it. The movie is the right mix between humans and transformers. The new cast of Autobots all get screentime right from the beginning (unlike the first one where only Bumblebee shows up for the first third). The plight of the Autobots is well done and it is very understanble that even Optimus is this close to losing hope and abandoning Earth to its troubles in disgust. The 3 new Autobots get personalities and more than enough screentime to make a mark. The humans do their part. Mark Wahlberg's character is a good human lead. His daughter though is awful. She is basically an object in constant danger that needs to be saved. Even her boyfriend is much more useful.
The villain, Lockdown, is handsdown the best villain in the Transformers movie franchise. He is menacing, he is ruthless, he is unstoppable. He's after Optimus and he won't stop until he gets him. He looks amazing and his face-cannon is awesome. Remember how Shockwave was initially promoted as the main villain of Dark of the Moon to hid the reveal of the real villain? Well, Lockdown is everything Shockwave could have been and better.
Now let's talk Dinobots. I'll come out and say it. They're the 'advertised extra' of this movie. Only Grimlock gets any lines and none of them are even named in the movie and only show in the last half hour for Optimus to ride into battle. But they're AWESOME. Real shame about that lack of screentime.

And what about negatives? Surely a Michael Bay movie has a possibly annoying comic relief? Racist humour? Well, those are surprisingly absent (not completely but Bay has been listening to the fans, apparently). Characters have story arcs, both human and transformer. There is actual character development and screentime dedicated to transformers just talking amongst themselves or to humans for some good moments. Some may complain about the long runtime but personally, I have never watched a movie that felt too long. In fact, I wished it was longer. The movie is darker and more serious, the toilet humour is gone (though general juveline humour still is present) and is just more enjoyable.
He did it. Michael Bay finally made a good Transformers movie.
