That was a critical capture. It's a mechanic that was introduced in Gen V and it is more likely to trigger if you've caught a lot of Pokemon.

I still haven't found any Shiny Pokemon as of yet. I've gotten a bunch over Wonder Trade, including four Shiny Terrakion, but none that I've found myself. Finding them or hatching them is so much more exciting and worthwhile.
