Say Hello to my 1000th Post!
So, we’ve seen all the new consoles for the 8th Generation: The Wii U, The Playstation 4, and the Xbox One. We’ve seen the 8th Generation begin when the Wii U launched back in November. However, the sales for the Wii U are… well, they’re less than a certain ex-member of the board’s IQ (for those who know me, you know who I am referring to).
Okay, so let’s begin with the Wii U – where does it stand? Well, ever since its premier at the 2011 E3 Press Conference, reactions were lukewarm regarding the console. Was it just a Tablet Controller? Why did Nintendo show only the controller? Was it truly a leap of graphics for them? Will they ever get back the 3rd Party Support they have been lacking since the Nintendo 64?
Here’s how it went down, it’s not just a tablet controller – it was emphasized because they claimed the console itself wasn’t important, but the input for the console was. Okay, I’ll give them that. However, many people were confused as to whether the Wii U Pad was even accessory or not to the original Wii. Along with that and the brand name, I can see why the confusion has been around. The confusion is especially prominent when Nintendo, or specifically Nintendo of America, have been doing a piss poor job at marketing the console.
Where does the Wii U stand? As of right now, with E3 coming, Nintendo has been stating they will have more games this year and next year. However, the wait has been too long. The repercussions have been enormous. From the backlash and lack of support from several publishers such as EA, the console’s sales have dwindled from the impressive 100,000s or so… to the minimal 30,000 and possible even less.
With many people often making the statement that Nintendo is doomed, are they truly? That question is easily defined as: Are you crazy? They are FAR from doomed. Yes, the system isn’t as good as it should be, what with the rushness and lack of marketing akin to the 3DS and its early rise, the war vaults in Nintendo’s Headquarters are said to run up to the near 100 billions in yen. Also with the Yen losing some weight on it, they’re getting more and more profit – even though it’s not as much as they should be, resulting in their “loss”.
So, in lay man terms, even if they failed with the Wii U and, let’s say, about 4 more consoles afterwards, they’ll be alright still. Hell, even Michael Pachter, whom I despise with a vengeance, believes they could still be around in 2075 or some shit like that, I don’t know.
Sadly, even though they’re financially decent, they want the Wii U to be success. If they don’t reach at least a certain amount of sales for it, from what I remember being 20 million, then the President of Nintendo Satoru Iwata will then resign his position – which is a troubling time indeed as he is the one who brought Nintendo into a good light with many other publishers and developers after Yamauchi, the previous president, reigned the video game market with an iron fist.
So, Nintendo really needs to prove that they can get the Wii U to respectable sales again and have the 3rd Party go back to the console and their side. The only way how is to show off their games such as the new 3D Mario, Smash Bros, etc. With E3 coming in just 2 weeks, they’ll need all they can.
For Microsoft, that’s a bit of a doozy right here. They weren’t the best when it came to selling the original Xbox, which made at least 5-10 million more than the Nintendo Gamecube. However, that changed with the Xbox 360, their HD console that came out in 2005 and it continues to outsell the PS3, while being outsold by the Wii.
Things were going good for Microsoft, in my opinion. They were becoming what people considered the console for gamers and many multiplatform games were always superior on their end. Things went horrible after 2010 with their foray into motion controls with the Kinect.
Oh, how bad it came to be.
No longer were they the leaders in hardcore gaming with Xbox Live, better multiplats, beloved (debatable) exclusives, and game support. Now, they focused on reaching the casual market by bringing in motion controls with a camera. That damn Kinect worked as much as Taylor Swift’s relationships!
With the Xbox One, it shows how little they care about their fanbase. Preventing use games to an incremental always online DRM, the console has been so horrendous that in Amazon.Uk the fucking Nintendo Wii U has risen in sales by 807%!
Microsoft just helped their rivals in garnering more sales. Hell, they even helped Sony have a stock increase by 10%! How generous of you, Microsoft…
With lack of games and horrible showing of the Xbox One, Microsoft really needs to prove on E3 that they still care about their fanbase. Alas, I think from the awful news for it… I think it might be a bit too late. Though, with news companies like Fox, CNN, and other idiotic companies, they all make it out to be the best damn thing since God said, “Eat me.” So while it may be popular and sale well with the couch moms, until they find out how shit it is, the gamers probably won’t touch it with a 10-foot pole.
Lastly, Sony… they have redeemed themselves. You see, ever since the Playstation 2 era, Sony were considered the under dogs. They were relatively new to the console business and succeeded both times with the PS1 and PS2 due to their technology around CDs and DVDs respectively. However, things changed… or as how Snake says it… “War has changed”.
In 2005, they made the PSP in order to combat against the DS line by Nintendo. With superior graphics, being a gimped PS2, and more of a “hardcore” feel to it, you would think they would have won, right? Ha-ha, wrong.
Instead, they were beaten every step of the way. It wasn’t until the homebrew community hacked the handheld that the sales skyrocketed, making it the most successful handheld that’s not from Nintendo. Which is quite an accomplishment, I will add.
Then in 2006 and onwards, Sony made the tragic mistake of making the PS3 so difficult to program that the games suffered and only the 1st party knew how to work it. The problem was… they didn’t sell as much as the Xbox games! Let’s say this: for an Xbox 360 game, it would have sold at least 10 million units. For a PS3 game: 4 million.
If that wasn’t bad enough, they were losing money every time it sold! They had such a drought on games that people often ridiculed it for not having any games, until Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in 2008… which sold less than what Konami expected. It still sold a lot, but not as much as they wanted.
Then in 2009, they started getting profit with the release of God of War 3 and the Playstation 3 Slim. Things were looking good as they started getting some respect.
However, things got worse. With Jack Tretton’s horrendous attitude toward Nintendo and Microsoft, the release of the Playstation Vita, and the hacking of PSN in 2012, things weren’t going well.
They got arrogant with the Vita, making it so powerful that it was often considered a gimped 360 much like how the 3DS was considered a borderline between the Gamecube and Wii.
They got arrogant with their proprietary sales with their own memory sticks, which are too expensive even now. They then started copying Nintendo with the Playstation Move, which they don’t even support anymore – which goes to show they really have no care for things.
They started losing popularity as they were no longer the leading innovators with tvs and other electronics. Though, now with the PS4, things are going differently.
The PS4 now has an x86 architecture, which is used in PCs, making it really easy to develop for. However, they still aren’t in the clear with the lack of backwards compatibility and even not letting people transfer their PSN games to the PS4 – what the fuck?
There are so many things that are still mysterious about the PS4. Will it allow used games? Will Sony follow Microsoft’s route? What the HELL is up with the ugly controller? And what does the system even look like?
Again, with E3 coming… we all shall see.
What do you guys think? Will you see anything positive happening to these 3 consoles or will you all be cynical twats like me?
