He has apparently been "awakened" as Serebii says.

Though I would argue that there's a difference between balsy and ignorance. That particular move would be a combination of the two, basly in the fact that he knew Mewtwo's power and still did it, ignorance in thinking that it would actually do something other than get him hurt/killed. Which would have happened if not for Mew's intervention.

On that note, Ash really needs to get a competent Psychic-Type. I would be asking for Dragon but when he finally got one of them, and a future pseudo-legendary to boot, he sidelines the thing not long after. If he actually trained Gible, Pikachu, Charizard, and Sceptile would have major competition as Ash's ace.
