He doesn't have any Pokemon at the moment, or possibly not at all, because he's the son of the leader of Team Plasma and he's against keeping Pokemon in Pokeballs. He's pretty much the main character of this arc/season.

Also, they're trying to power up Pokemon, which is hurting them, and N's like this kind of Pokemon Rights kind of guy that can communicate with Pokemon and wants to stop his dad's team from hurting them.
