Not entirely sure of everything that it can do, but it does show you who of your friends is playing X or Y and with an internet connection. There's also something that I've been finding that gives you something that you can gift over that connection but I don't really have anyone registered playing so I can't really experiment with it.

Well the PSS uses three different ways of adding people. The first is by use of the DS's build in friend system which is the code that I posted. The other is acquaintance which is people who aren't on that list but you've traded with or battled. The last is people around you with the game and aren't in the above two lists.
